I'm back from my road trip around BC playing disc golf and seeing some friends. What a great time and I played some great courses. I want to provide a full write-up of each course separately so I won't go over each course in detail. However, I will say that I played two courses.

The first is a private disc golf course in Princeton, BC. The course is a nine-hole par 18 course. Yes, par 18. It's really short and each hole has a makeable ACE. However, if you go for the pin you'll be punished. I ended up aceing hole number 2 and hole number 7. I have pictures of both holes so I'll post some pictures of the holes in due time. For now I'll just post the picture of hole 7.

The second course is probably one of the oldest disc golf courses in BC. It's an object course about 15 minutes from Nelson BC. The course was first setup in 1987 so it's approximately 19 years old now. The course is located next to the Mount Sentinel High School. We had to modify a few of the holes because the kids were having recess. However, we were still able to play all 9 holes. I was even able to ace hole number 5 (which we had to modify).

You're on the tee-box and you have a narrow hallway to the pin. Obviously, the course designer wants you to head down the hallway as there's a high chance of hitting a tree.

The 'safe' shot is to throw with less strength and more accuracy. I often do this at a risk of not getting within birdie range. However, this usually leaves me with a possibility of still hitting a birdie while guaranteeing the par. Never a bad thing. However, there is another option to consider is thinking outside of the box.

Is there a bunch of trees in the way? What about going around the trees? or even over the Trees. What about a hammer down the hallway?

Thinking outside of the box on the tee box can really decrease (or increase) your score. You can often find a hallway that you've never know about by trying this method. However, once you've discovered something that works be sure that you remember HOW you were able to get through that hole. How hard was the throw? Where did it enter through? Where did it exit from? Was it a fluke?

Most importantly. Is this a viable option in the future?

This weekend I was searching around on the internet at different disc golf discs. I figured that it's almost time to tryout a new disc. The question is what disc?

Anyway, while I was searching around I found that there are 10 different manfacturer's making disc golf discs. Here they are in alphabetical order with links to the manufacturer's site.

Ching

Daredevil

Discraft

Discwing

DGA

Innova

Latitude 64

Lightning

Millenium

Quest

Anyway, it's pretty crazy to me because in Calgary you can only buy Innova and Discraft. I'm sure it's a bit different in Colorado where disc golf is much larger. However, it's just surprising that these new companies haven't been pushing their discs more. With a little marketing and assuming the discs fly good, I think that some of these companies could really break into the disc market.

If you're one of these companies and reading this then contact me. I'd love to review one of your discs here on this blog.

As I mentioned in my last post I was going disc golfing on Saturday. Well, my wife and I and three friends went and played a round.

What a beautiful sunny spring day. As mentioned the ground was exactly as we'd assume it would be; sloppy, wet and muddy. But that didn't matter. Nothing spectacular to report in terms of the disc golf round. Although, I do know that I badly need a new DX Valkyrie. My old one is now very understable and was trailing off to the right.

Anyway, we played a round and then hit the road to do some shopping. While we were just about to go into the store my wife discovered that her cellphone was missing. Oh man. It's at the disc golf course (somewhere on the course).

So we head back to the course and upon arriving start walking around calling the phone. Suddenly someone picks up the phone.

"hello"

"I think you have my phone"

"Yeah, it's not my phone. Are you a disc golfer?"

"Yeah. We just finished and are just looking for the phone"

"Cool. I'm on Hole #8"

"Great. See you in a minute"

Just like that we have our phone back. I'd like to assume that everyone would do that same thing. However, the neighborhood where the phone was located isn't the best area. Anyway, I'm super happy that a disc golfer found the phone and we were able to get it back.

Since I'm going disc golfing today I thought it would be a good idea to mention some things to consider during springtime disc golf. As most people know, disc golf in springtime can be a very messy adventure. All the melting snow, rain and mud can really leave you cold and frustrated. Hopefully these tips will make your early-summer round more enjoyable.

When making your drives make sure that you're aiming away from the pools of water or mud. Sometimes to avoid driving into the water you'll have to take a longer route. I often take this longer route so that on my second shot I can get a more solid footing. When you're second shot is in the water or mud you won't be able to throw the second shot as far. Therefore, by changing the direction of your drive you'll be able to get to the basket with the same accuracy.

Bring a disc golf towel to wipe your discs. One of the key principles of disc flight (Bernouli's Principle) is spin. Disc golf is all about getting your disc rotating. IF you're trying to throw a wet disc then you'll definitely get less spin then if your disc was dry.

Bring a wind-breaker to cut the wind. Finally, when playing in the springtime you'll usually be playing in windy conditions. Even if the temperature outside is nice the wind can really rip through you. Playing cold will really cut down the enjoyment of having a round.

Wear appropriate footwear / boots. This one goes without saying but you should ensure that you're wearing the appropriate footwear. Boots are definitely recommended in these wet slippery conditions. Save on Timberland Boots at Altrec Outdoors

Remember, this is probably one of your first springtime disc golf rounds. The most important part is to enjoy yourself. Be sure to bring your smile.
