Best Discs For Beginner Disc Golfers
By sillsil2 | March 29, 2008
After taking a new player for a round of disc golf I'm usually asked, "What disc should I buy for myself?" I usually answer, "Any disc!"
The reason I say this is because one of the keys to getting better at disc golf is to simply PLAY! Once you own a disc you'll be more inclined to play more often. It's really that simple!
Also, I find allowing a newer player to pick 'any' disc they can select they're favorite animal, colour or feel and thus making them 'attached' to their disc. The truth of the matter is that most new players won't be able to tell the difference between say a ROC and a SHARK.
That being said, if the person is at a certain skill level and would like more then one disc I think a multi-pack is always a good idea. Multipacks are usually cheaper then paying for each disc separately and usually have discs that are good for a beginners skill level. The Innova Disc Golf 3 Disc Set for example, costs $29.99 and comes with three discs the LEOPARD, SHARK and AVIAR! The Leopard and AVIAR are
two of my favorite discs so I really like this disc pack.
What I don't usually recommend is anything with a 'specialty' plastic like the Champion or Elite Z plastic. Although, the discs will last longer much MUCH longer, they're usually harder to throw and more frustrating to beginners. So, I avoid these discs and try to get a simple DX disc.
Next time a player asks you what disc to buy help them to get into disc golf by telling them, 'ANY DISC!'
